Missions @ EEFC
"God is a missionary God. The Bible is a missionary book. The Gospel is a missionary subject. The Church is a missionary institution. And when the church ceases to be missionary minded, it has denied its faith and betrayed its trust." - page 1 from "The Making of a Missionary" by J Herbert Kane.
EEFC's missions are based on these 4 thrusts:
- Teaching the Biblical basis of missions.
- Linking - gathering and providing information related to missionary work globally.
- Being a responsible sending church.
Teaching
As part of our teaching thrust towards missions, we organise or participate in the following programmes:
- Missions Month - in our church calendar, every October is dedicated for missions. Missionaries and representatives from various mission agencies will be invited to share their works, situations and needs in the mission fields. In addition, one of the weekends in October will be set apart as a Missions Weekend, where a continuous series of missions related messages will be preached. Our Sunday School, Youth Alive! and College CG will also focus on missions during the month.
- Regular church meeting platforms - opportunities will be used through our Sunday Pulpit, CGs, Youth Alive! and Sunday School sessions to create and increase awareness and support of missions.
- Missions Conferences - examples include OMF Missions Conference and AFMC.
- The Kairos Course - we have conducted the first Kairos Course in May/June 2008. We plan to conduct the second class on 21, 22, 27, 28 and 29 November 2009. Look out for further announcements soon.
- Missions through literature.
Linking
We strive to link our ministries and members with missions via:
- Gathering and providing information through missions updates, newsletters, and our quarterly prayer letter.
- Have missionaries visit our CGs, Youth Alive! groups and sharing their work during Sunday Service.
- Participating in short term mission trips.
- Meeting with missionaries during Missions Conferences.
Selection
What are the criteria we use to select candidates to send into the mission field?
- Character of the candidate (credentials and charisma are secondary considerations).
- Call of the candidate (how has God called the candidate to serve Him as a missionary).
- How has God used the candidate in evangelism and ministry?
Being a Sending Church
A sender is someone who deems their most strategic contribution to world evangelization is to be staying in their home country and living in such a way as to support most effectively the maximum number of goers as they are able. The sender is not a washed out missionary or a goer who never made it. God calls us all to be involved in world evangelization and He calls many to be senders in His plan.
Our main responsibilities as a sending church include:
- Prayer through missionary spots during Sunday Service, Quarterly Corporate Prayer Meetings and prayer time during CG and Youth Alive! meetings. "The evangelization of the world depends first upon a revival of prayer. Deeper than the need for workers; deeper far than the need for money; deep down at the bottom of our spiritual lives, is the need for the forgotten secret of prevailing world wide prayer. Missions has progressed slowly abroad because piety and prayer have been shallow at home." - from "The Church and Missions" by Robert E. Speer (1867-1947).
- Building friendships with the missionary. This is accomplished via:
- Sharing of missionary news updates.
- Bi-monthly prayer letters.
- Adopting the missionary family.
- Visiting the missionary.
- Finance - "If there was less pleading and reliance on man to give, and more pleading and dependence on God to provide, then the problem of money for missions would find its ultimate solution." - from "East Asia's Millions" - J. Hudson Taylor.
- Caring for the missionary family.
